Our Manchester Camerata chums head to the seaside and Withernsea High School this week, for a concert filled with music inspired by the dramatic East Yorkshire coastline.
Taking place on Thursday, 18 April 2024 at 18:30, the two-hour event features a programme picked by the local community to celebrate the significant anniversaries and amazing work of local lifeboats and the RNLI.
This year it signals the 200-year anniversary of the RNLI nationwide, the 30 year anniversary of Hornsea Inshore Rescue and the 50 year anniversary of the return of a lifeboat to Withernsea RNLI lifeboat station.
The unique concert features music from composers such as Mendelsohn and Debussy, alongside scores from films like Pirates of the Caribbean and many more. As well as this, there will be two world premieres of music created by the community performed with the orchestra.
Students from Withernsea and Hornsea High Schools have created new music, including a sea shanty, with composer Kate Pearson. Care settings Bleak House, Granville Court, Mere Hall Care Home and The Queens Residential Home have worked with Janet Fulton to create their own new music inspired by the coast. Young and old will be performing at the concert with Manchester Camerata, Hornsea Choir and Withernsea Ladies Choir.
Those behind the event are particularly proud to be working with the local lifeboat teams from Withernsea RNLI and Hornsea Inshore Rescue, to celebrate their contribution to their communities.
The Withernsea Young Producers, a group of students from Withernsea High School that have been instrumental in the organising, marketing, and programming of this event, said: “We think it is great that we have more involvement in the creation of the concert. It makes it more personal to us and our communities.”
Nicola Dixon, Arts Development Officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We’re so proud of this event that we have all worked so hard on, and can’t wait to celebrate our lifeboats and the heroes that risk their lives to save those at sea.
“The community has really rallied around this cause to create a wonderful event, crafting their own music and contributing their own experiences and feelings to the concert. It’s sure to be something that you won’t want to miss!”
